Aromatherapy for Stress Relief and Relaxation
In this day and age, we all need to learn to relax. Aromatherapy can be very helpful and beneficial for relaxing. You can mix up your own oils, lotions or use in a diffuser to promote feelings of relaxation.
- Blend the following essential oils together along with one ounce or a carrier oil, such as jojoba oil, olive oil or grapeseed oil. Mix three drops of lavender oil, three drops of tangerine oil, three drops of marjoram oil and one drop of chamomile oil. You can use this mixture in your bath or rub into your skin. It promotes positive energy and balance.
- Make a bath mesh! Mix ¼ of a cup of aloe gel (make sure it’s pure; try the health food store), ¼ of a cup of honey, ¼ of a cup of sea salt, ¼ of a cup of heavy cream or powdered milk, 2 teaspoons of jojoba oil, 5 drops of your favorite essential oil (try lavender or rosemary to promote relaxation). Mix all ingredients together right before you take a bath. You may be able to make this mixture beforehand and store in the refrigerator for up to a week before use, but I would recommend making and using it fresh. After mixing the mixture together, stir it really well while mixing it into your bathwater in order to get it to blend in with the water. This mixture will help you to distress in no time!
- A simple old-fashioned home remedy: Take 2 chamomile tea bags, 8 ounces of spring water. Bring the water to a boil and pour over the tea bags in a large cup or bowl. Allow the mixture to steep for 1 minute. Remove the tea bags from the water and put directly into the freezer for five minutes. Drink the chamomile tea. After the five minutes are up, put the frozen tea bags over your eyes and recline.
- For relaxation and to treat insomnia: Use two to three drops each of Ylang Ylang oil and Sandalwood oil in a warm bath or a diffuser.
- You can massage essential oils into your hands and feet for a very relaxing treat! Children particularly love hand massages. Lavender is an excellent essential oil to use. Use three to five drops of essential oil per tablespoon of oil base. If you are mixing this batch up for a child or an infant, use half of the essential oil you would use for an adult mixture. Try sweet almond oil or apricot oil as a base oil. Any unscented carrier oil will do.
- To make buttermilk bath salts, mix 1 cup of buttermilk powder with 1 cup of sea salt and 24 drops of essential oil. Blend very well and keep in a sealed jar. Use ½ cup of this mixture per bath. This recipe makes enough for four baths.
- To make your own relaxing bath cookies, mix together 2 cups of rock salt with ½ a cup of baking soda, ½ a cup of cornstarch, 2 tablespoons of almond oil, 1 teaspoon of vitamin E oil, 2 eggs and 6 drops of essential oil. Cut with cookie cutters into whatever shape you want. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Allow to cool completely. Use 1 to 2 cookies per bath, but store in an airtight container in the refrigerator to keep them fresh and from spoiling.
